Creating Timor-Leste Updates

June 30th, 2008

Epson plays an active role in the community by supporting activities and groups that promote cultural understanding, education and the arts. Epson is proud to support the "Creating Timor-Leste" project.

Another partner is Clifton Creative Arts Centre in Richmond. They are providing the venue for the exhibition.

Airnorth has also come on board and will offer to return airfares from Darwin-Dili for the principal photographer and writer.

"Creating Timor-Leste" was started in 2005 by Jorge and Katie de Araujo. It is a community partnership between professional and artists in Australia and East Timor to create a photographic book and exhibition. The project endeavours to portray the vibrancy, tenacity and vision of the people who are creating the world's newest nation.

The exhibition is being planned for September/October 2009 in Melbourne. It is also intended to travel to Sydney, Darwin and Timor-Leste.

If you'd like to get involved with the project or offer your support for the exhibition in the various locations please contact jorge@raimoris.com.

The conflicts in East Timor have calmed down and that’s great news for all the Timorese. This peaceful situation also means that TiLPA photographers who had to relocate to escape the violence are now back in their headquarters and creating what they love. They have an exhibition in Timor, “Dalan Nabilan” which means “A Bright Future”.
The dates are: 24th Oct – 30th Nov 2007.
Location: Memorial Hall, Dili.
Flyer below. If you happen to be in Timor pencil it in your diary to check out this fantastic collection of work.

First of all apologies for this late entry. A lot has happened since my last update. We had another exhibition in April 2007. A few artists came together to raise money to send two East Timorese women to the YWCA World Council in Kenya.
"Looking Through" Exhibition is about East Timorese people, the changes since the independence, the issues that they are facing in their everyday lives and how it is communicated and perceived by the outside world.

The proposed launch date for the book "Creating Timor-Leste" was in November 2006. However it has been postponed because of the following reasons:
-  my trip to Timor-Leste in June 2006 was cancelled due to the unrest. The purpose of that trip was to photograph the rest of the stories for the book.
- the Timorese photographers that I'm working with were personally affected by the unrest so they weren't able to produce their work. Below is an email I received from Ze'sopol C. Caminha, one the photographers in Timor, who returned to Timor from USA in July.

English
“The situation in Dili is getting better but a lot of people haven’t gone back to their homes and they’re still at the refugee camps. My family is ok but their hourse was burnt down. The most important thing is that they’re alive and well.
I haven’t seeing my colleagues from TiLPA. The situation in Dili isn’t like before. There are people walking around but it’s not safe anymore. There are suburbs that I haven’t been able to go to for over a month now. They are: Taibesi, Lahane, Matdouru and Manleuana.
