"Creating Timor-Leste / Rai Moris" is photographer and expatriate Timorese, Jorge de Araujo's endeavour to portray the vibrancy, tenacity and vision of the people who are creating a new nation from the struggles of their past. Fifty individual black and white portraits and stories join together to provide a deep and rich investigation of the people who are rebuilding their community and country from the struggles of the past and present, such as: Xanana the president, Afonso the businessman, Banito the motocross legend, Carmelita the judge, and Dr Lucas the lecturer. Jorge's inspiration was Jose, a 10 year old street kid, who offered to help him but whom Jorge was suspicious of. On a Dili street Jose offered to jump in Jorge's car and provide directions but asked for a dollar to get a cab back. In the end Jose declined to take the money and said, "I just wanted to help". This book is Jorge's attempt to do that same thing for this new country he now feels deeply connected to. Jorge’s photos provide outsiders an insight into the activities, skills and creativity of the East Timorese. He captures their determination, passion, and dedication. Shot in a real format the reader is left with a raw feeling of having been there. Recent unrest in Timor has given the international community an obscured view of the country and its people. This book will restore the view of Timor’s beauty and the sense of togetherness connecting its people. Creating Timor-Leste / Rai Moris is most importantly aimed at inspiring the people of Timor-Leste to recognise their own power and contribution in creating their homeland, therefore the book will be bi-lingual - English and Tetum. Our greatest hope is to have the book available to school children who will no doubt be intrigued by their fellow leaders and fascinated by the English language. TiLPA (Timorese photographers from Timor-Leste Photographers Association) is a major contributor to the project.
