Elizabete Lim Gomes
Writer & Poet

Elizabete is an East Timorese writer with a passion for the magic of the land and it's people. Her poems reflect her great love for the land and admiration for the ones who have dedicated and sacrificed their lives to fight for independence.

Excerpt of a poem:
...Steep mountains
Deep valleys
High and lows
Bliss and blows
There is no freedom without pain
sacrifice and restrain
Smile face
Hardened gaze...

Excerpt of another poem:
Rai Inan Motherland
Rai Inan the great mother
The land is her body
Earth is her flesh
Water is her blood
Wind is her breath
Fire is her warmth...

The East Timorese ancient wisdom knows the island of Timor as a living entity with its own spirit. The island sees, hears, smells and feels its people's actions. The spirit of the land punishes or rewards its people according to their actions in relation to themselves and to the land.

Excerpt of another poem:
...Let me feel Earth
throb in my veins.
Love is also brown.
Let me paint my face
with the colour of love.
I am you, you are me.
I see my reflection
in your brown water.
You see your reflection
in my brown eyes.

Elizabete has had more serious poems performed in benefit concerts and fund raising events for East Timor and she has had them also published in literary magazines. She has written articles, letters and papers which have been published in newspapers, academic magazines and online.
Elizabete is currently writing fiction about the struggle of East Timor for independence. Two pieces titled: The Silent Cry and The Invisible Runner.
She hopes to have them finished this year.
